The Bowdoin College women's soccer team scored three goals in the first 29 minutes and held off a late charge by Colby to take a 3-2 win on Saturday in Brunswick. The Polar Bears improve to 11-2 on the season, while the Mules drop to 5-5-1. The Bowdoin women's soccer team has never lost to Colby College, dating back to their first meeting in 1979, holding a 31-0-2 edge in the all-time series.
Bowdoin took little time to get going as senior Michal Shapiro- in her final regular season home game- headed home a goal off a corner kick from Cedar Goldman to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game. At 17:47, Goldman chipped another corner kick to Ivy Blackmore, who scored from just inside the box to make it 2-0 Bowdoin. Senior Jill Falwell added a goal of her own at 28:39 with an assist from Julie Gallant to give the Polar Bears a three-goal lead with 60 minutes to play.
Colby rallied to score once before halftime, as Christina Andaya took a cross from Laura Williamson and booted it home to make it 3-1 at 33:19. The Mules cut the lead to one goal at 77:12 when Williamson found the lower right corner of the goal to make it 3-2. But Bowdoin held onto the lead and took their sixth straight victory.
Bowdoin's Anna Shapell made two stops for the Polar Bears. Colby's Liza Benson (four saves) and Elizabeth Riley (three saves) each played a half for the Mules. Bowdoin controls their own playoff destiny as they enter their final week of regular season play. A victory at Bates next Saturday would clinch first-place in the NESCAC and home-field advantage for the NESCAC Semifinals and Championship on November 8-9.
