Williamson sets goal record as Colby wins
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Colby College first-year forward Laura Williamson (Manchester, Conn.) broke the school record for goals in a season to lead the Mules to a 1-0 victory over Tufts University in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday.
Williamson, who already holds the Colby single-season scoring record, scored her 14th goal of the year with 16:31 left in the game off an assist from junior defender Katie Austgen (Carmel, Ind.). Williamson finished her first season with the Mules with 14 goals and seven assists for 35 points.
Tufts had already clinched at least the seventh and final spot in the NESCAC Tournament heading into the game. The No. 7 Jumbos (9-5, 4-5) will play at second-seeded Amherst College at noon on Sunday in a quarterfinal game.
Colby finished 8-5-1 and 3-5-1 in the league, but the Mules finished just outside the tourney in eighth place. Colby had no seniors on this year's roster and the top three scorers on the squad were first-year players.
Elizabeth Riley (Saco, Maine) made three saves in the opening half and Liza Benson (Orchid, Fla.) added three stops in the second half to combine for the Colby shutout. Meg McCourt (Rochester, N.Y.) had six saves for Tufts.
