Colby women's tennis romps past Rochester
BRUNSWICK, Maine --
Sara Hughes (South Burlington, Vt.) earned a tough three-set victory over Joanna Toke at first singles to lead the Colby College women's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over University of Rochester at Bowdoin College on Sunday.
Hughes, the Co-NESCAC Player of the Year last season and an All-American in doubles, took a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win. Toke was the NCAA Division III singles runner-up in 2001 and was an NCAA quarterfinalist in 2002.
Hughes improved to 6-1 overall in singles play this spring and has a 6-0 record against Division III opponents. Hughes also joined up with Allison Dunn (Tucson, Ariz.) for an 8-4 win against Toke and Tara Pajoohi at first doubles. Dunn had a tough test in a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Pajoohi at second singles.
Paige Hanzlik (Oak Brook, Ill.), Christina Pluta (Mercer Island, Wash.), Lauren Uhlmann (Kansas City, Kan.) and Anna Erdheim (New York, N.Y.) were other singles winners for Colby.
The Mules will play at MIT at 9 a.m. Saturday and then play host to Connecticut College at 2 p.m. Sunday.
