Hughes makes NCAA Division III Tennis Tournament
WATERVILLE, Maine --
Colby College's Sara Hughes (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) will play in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships starting Saturday at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
Hughes, a junior, will participate in singles play. She also qualified in doubles, but only will play singles this weekend. Hughes earned All-America status for doubles last year after being ranked ninth in the country along with playing partner Britt Palmedo '03.
The Co-New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore, Hughes earned NESCAC second team honors this year after just missing out on making the championship match at the NESCAC Tournament. Hughes lost in a super tiebreaker by two points to decide her semifinal match. Players making NESCAC championship matches in the different flights are honored with first team status.
Hughes is 10-2 in singles play this year, with the tough NESCAC Tournament loss and a setback to a Division I player during the spring trip to South Carolina. She is 17-5 overall (doubles record included) this year and is 49-18 over the last two seasons.
Hughes finished last year ranked 23rd in Division III in singles play.
