Southern Maine fights back to beat Colby baseball

(from a Southern Maine sports information release)

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) pitched six innings of scoreless, two-hit long relief as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Colby College 10-5 in a non- conference game Wednesday afternoon.

Foley entered the game with no outs and a man on first in the second inning and the Mules leading 5-0. He quickly got a double play ball and a groundout to end the inning. The right-hander retired the first 14 batters he faced before junior Greg Ortiz (Northbrook, Ill.) reached him for a single to open the seventh. Foley would allow just two singles, no walks and struck out three.

Under threatening skies, the Huskies wiped out the Colby lead with a five-run rally in the fourth inning. A costly infield error on a potential double play grounder hurt the Mules. Sophomore Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) had a bases loaded single to plate the Huskies' first two runs. After a hit batsman, consecutive bases loaded walks to sophomores Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) and Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) brought in two more runs and ended the pitching efforts of Colby sophomore starter Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.).

Colby brought on sophomore Robert Rosenbaum (Washington, D.C.) and he walked the first batter he faced, sophomore Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine), to force in the tying run. Rosenbaum escaped further damage getting a double play. USM took the lead for good in the fifth inning as senior Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) walked, stole second and came home on an RBI single by freshman Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.). The Huskies added three insurance runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to give Foley and junior Andrew Portwine (Gorham, Maine), who came on in the eighth inning, a cushion.

Colby looked strong in the first inning as the first six batters reached base and four runs came across the plate against USM freshman starter Kyle Fecteau (Biddeford, Maine). Carr had a two-run single and junior Roddy Ames (Cotuit, Mass.) followed with an RBI double. The fourth run scored on an infield error. Freshman Sam Kennedy-Smith (Newton, Mass.) added an RBI single in the second inning to make 5-0 before Foley entered the game and shut down the Colby bats.

Junior Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine) had three hits, and Bourque and Skeffington had two each, for the Huskies. Southern Maine hosts St. Joseph's College in its next game on Friday starting at 3:00 p.m. Colby will host Bates College on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
