Bates baseball takes victory over Colby, 7-5
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Bates College scored two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 5-5 tie and go on to a 7-5 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division baseball Friday.
Kyohei Yamada (Kamatsu, Japan) drove in Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) with the winning run on a single to right field. The Bobcats (6-10, 2-4 NESCAC East) added a second run in the ninth on a Colby error.
Colby had tied the game at 5-5 with a lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Mules had taken a 2-1 lead through five innings, but Bates scored four times in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. Colby (0-21, 0-7) fought back with two runs in the sixth to make it a 5-4 game.
Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) went 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles for Bates. Adam Taranto (Sudbury, Mass.) added two hits and two walks.
Tyler Hales (Lexington, Mass.) led Colby with three hits. Nick Spillane (Darien, Conn.) and Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.) both had two hits for the Mules.
Dan Bousquet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) worked the final two innings and got the win for Bates. Sam Kennedy-Smith (Newton, Mass.) went more than eight innings for the Mules and took the tough loss.
Colby will play at Bates on Saturday at noon in a doubleheader.
