Tufts takes two from Colby in baseball

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Tufts University scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning, all of them unearned after a costly error, to pull out a 10-8 victory in the second game over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division play Saturday.

Tufts (20-8, 9-2 NESCAC) had 19 hits in the opener in a 22-0 victory over the Mules.

The Jumbos scored the three runs in the ninth inning without the benefit of a hit. Tufts used two walks, two hit by pitches and the error to bring the runs across.

Brian Casey had two hits and three runs scored for the Jumbos in the second game.

Tyler Hales had three hits, including a home run and a triple, for Colby. Andy Carr and Steve Sandak both had two hits for the Mules.

Tufts had seven runs in the first inning and 12 in the seventh inning in the first game win. Jim O'Leary and Kyle Backstrom each homered for the Jumbos. Greg Chertok had four hits and three runs scored.
