Colby baseball loses league game to Bowdoin
(from a Bowdoin sports information release)
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Behind a complete game from pitcher Trevor Powers and a balanced offensive attack, the Bowdoin baseball team beat rival Colby, 11-5, in the first of three meetings between the two teams this weekend. The Polar Bears (9-5, 1-2 NESCAC) and Mules (0-12, 0-1 NESCAC) will play a doubleheader in Waterville on Saturday afternoon.
Colby grabbed a single run in the opening frame to take an early lead, but Bowdoin bounced back to score three runs in the bottom of the frame and never trailed again. Bowdoin's 1-3 hitters led an offensive barrage as Chris McCann, Nick Lawler and Jared Lemieux combined to go 6 for 11 on the day and score six runs.
The key inning of the game proved to be the seventh, when the Mules, trailing 7-4, loaded the bases with one out against Powers. The junior captain allowed a sac fly and got a strikeout to maintain a two-run lead. One inning later, Ricky Leclerc cleared the bases for Bowdoin, connecting on a three-rbi double to put the contest out of reach.
Powers scattered six hits and allowed just three earned runs on the day, striking out eight Mules and walking just one. Tyler Hales took the loss for Colby, allowing seven runs - only one of which was earned. The Mules were led offensively by Nick Spillane, who had two hits, and Roddy Ames, who hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
