Bates holds off Colby in baseball, 2-1
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Mike Kinsman (Yarmouth, Maine) struck out five and pitched a complete game in leading Bates College to a 2-1 victory over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division baseball Wednesday at Coombs Field.
Kinsman, now 5-1 on the season, had a perfect game through six innings before Colby's Brian Liberty (Hollis, N.H.) singled to start the seventh inning. Kinsman got 10 outs by ground ball and had four strikeouts among the 18 straight outs he recorded.
Bates (11-14, 5-6 NESCAC East) had lone runs in the second and third innings. Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.) walked in the second inning, moved to third on a double by Kyohei Yamada (Kamatsu, Japan) and then scored on a passed ball.
Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) was hit by a pitch in the third, went to second on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI single by Nate Reid (Greenfield, Mass.) for the eventual game-winning run.
Liberty got his single to start the seventh, went to third on an error and then scored on an RBI groundout by Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.). Liberty also had the other hit, a one-out single in the ninth inning for the Mules.
Rob Jacobs (Mequon, Wisc.) allowed just one earned run in nearly six innings of work for Colby, which ended its season 0-27 overall and 0-12 in the NESCAC East. Sam Kennedy-Smith (Newton, Mass.) came in for relief in the sixth and also pitched well for the Mules.
Reid and Yamada each had two hits to lead Bates. Adam Worrall (Duxbury, Mass.) doubled and walked twice for the Bobcats.
