Hockey player Bayley earns third National Academic All-America honor

WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Colby College men's hockey player Nick Bayley (Cambridge, Ontario) is once again among the top student-athletes in NCAA Division III athletics.

Bayley earned the 2004-05 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large College Division First Team honor for the third straight year Wednesday. He is the only Division II or III athlete in the At-Large division to earn first-team honors in all three years of eligibility. Embry-Riddle tennis player Nicholas Bousquet and Rensselaer's Patrick Fell are the only other three-time At-Large Division All-Americans in the past three years, but Bayley is the only one to make the first team each year.

The squad is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Men's At-Large sports are ice hockey, swimming, lacrosse, tennis, golf, rifle, volleyball, gymnastics, skiing, water polo and wrestling.

Bayley, who graduated from Colby in May with a degree in biology, was the only ice hockey player on the first team and the lone New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) athlete on any of the three 15-man teams.

Bayley finished his career third in all-time scoring at Colby. He had 61 goals and 87 assists for 148 points in 99 career games. Ron Ryan '62 (245 points) and Dan Lavergne '97 (179 points) had more career points than Bayley.

Bayley, a New England Small College Athletic Conference first-team selection after his sophomore season, was named to the second team the past two seasons. He led the Mules in scoring each of his four seasons at Colby. Bayley was first on the team in goals scored (16) and points (35) in the 2004-05 season.

Bayley helped head coach Jim Tortorella's team to a 62-28-10 record the last four years.
