COLBY WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY THIRD AT NE DIVISION III MEET (Women qualify for NCAA meet; men take 16th place)
CUMBERLAND, Maine --- The Colby College women's cross country team is
heading to Wisconsin.
The Mules finished in third place in the NCAA Division III New England
Regional Women's Cross Country Championships at the Cumberland Center on
Saturday. The top five teams in the New England Region go to the NCAA
Division III Championship meet next Saturday at University of Wisconsin-Eau
Claire.
The 16th-ranked Colby women beat fifth-ranked Amherst to finish behind
champion and second-ranked Middlebury (58 points) and top-ranked Williams
(64 points). The Mules finished at 131 and Amherst was fourth with 160.
Karina Johnson (Tolland, Conn.) finished in 14th place at 22 minutes, 35.8
seconds in the 6-kilometer race. Anna King (Greenland, N.H.) was 16th in
her first New England Championship meet at 22:38.9, while Jess Minty
(Concord, Mass.) was 22nd in 22:54.2. Elizabeth Petit (St. Grosse Point,
Mich.) was 37th in 23:19.6 and Elizabeth Turner (Cape Neddick, Maine) took
42nd in the field of 281 runners with a 23:26.2.
The Colby men placed 16th out of 39 teams as Jeff Alden (Caribou, Maine)
took 48th in 27:24.9 over five miles. Fred Bailey (Andover, Maine) was 58th
in 27:37.7 and Dan Vassallo (Wilmington, Mass.) placed 68th in 27:46.2.
Tufts won the men's meet with a score of 62.
