Colby women place fifth at NCAA meet

COLFAX, Wisc. --- The Colby College women's cross country team made school history with their best finish ever at the NCAA Division III Championships after taking fifth overall Saturday at Whitetail Golf Course.

Deb Aitken, Colby's 20th-year head coach, had led four other teams to NCAA competition. The 1994 team was the top finisher at 10th place.

The Mules had 202 points and were a solid fifth place out of 24 schools. Williams College won the national title with a 110 score. Middlebury was second with 129, Washington University (Mo.) took third at 149, and Wisconsin-Oshkosh placed fourth with 174.

Colby senior Karina Johnson (Tolland, Conn.) was the top finisher for the Mules in 45th place overall and she was 22nd among runners with teams in the field in 22:39.1 over the 6-kilometer course. First-year runner Anna King (Greenland, N.H.) had a big meet and placed 49th overall and 25th among teams with runners in the meet with a time of 22:44.2.

Sophomore Karen Prisby (Agawam, N.Y.) placed 65 overall in 22:56.1. Jess Minty (Concord, Mass.) took 82nd in 23:03.8, first-year Elizabeth Petit (Grosse Point, Mich.) was 110th in 23:24.6, Elizabeth Turner (Cape Neddick, Maine) was 131st with a 23:36.7, and Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) was 164th in 24:06.2.
