Crews have good day at New England Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. --- The Colby College women's varsity 8 finished fourth out of 18 crews at the New England Rowing Championships on Sunday.

The finish was the best ever for the Colby women at the New England meet. The Mules finished with a time of 6 minutes, 53.04 seconds over 2,000 meters in the Grand Final (places 1-6). Trinity College won the competition in 6:39.85, Williams College was second in 6:43.61, and Smith College was third in 6:49.76. Colby had a time of 6:47.73 in their heat race earlier in the day.

The finish helped the Colby women earn an invitation to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) National Invitational Regatta this Saturday and Sunday in Worcester. The Mules, with the most boats invited to the ECAC meet in school history, are also sending the men's varsity 8, the men's second varsity eight, the women's second varsity 8, and the women's novice 8.

The men's varsity 8 had their best finish since 1999 by taking seventh out of 14 crews. The crew won the Petite Final (places 7 to 12) with a time of 5:59.47. Colby was faster than the sixth place boat in the Grand Final.

The Colby women's novice 8 won a New England title by dominating the Grand Final with a time of 7:04.15. Williams was second with a 7:09.14. Colby, which won a heat earlier in the day by nine seconds, won the title for the second year in a row.

The men's second varsity 8 also had a best-ever finish by placing sixth. The Mules had a time of 6:21.88 in the Grand Final after going 6:28.35 in a heat.

The Colby women's second varsity 8 was eighth overall and second in the Petite Final with a 7:10.36 clocking. The crew was third in a heat at 7:21.28 earlier in the day.
