Colby women's crew sixth at NCAA meet
SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Colby College women’s crew finished in sixth place at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships on Saturday at California State University Aquatic Center.
The Colby women’s varsity 8 placed sixth in the Grand Final (places 1 to 6) and took sixth in the overall team standings with 18 points. Ithaca College won its second straight national title with 10 points (lowest amount of points wins title). Ithaca tied with Smith College at 10 points, but the Bombers were awarded the national title after beating Smith in the Grand Final.
Colby’s second boat at the championships did not qualify for Saturday’s Petite Final (places 6 to 12).
This was Colby’s third appearance in the NCAA meet in the four-year history of the event. The Mules finished in second place to Williams College in 2002 and then won the national title in 2003. Colby did not qualify for last year’s NCAA meet.
Colby’s varsity 8 boat was scheduled to include: Caroline Andresen (Norwich, Vt.), Caitlin Chamberlin (Kenmore, Wash.), Katie Curtis (Hebron, Maine), Sarah Dunham (Flagstaff, Ariz.), Leah Hagamen (Deerfield, Mass.), Megan Loosigian (Exeter, N.H.), Austin Phillips (Madison, Conn.), coxswain Rebecca Reisman (Cambridge, Mass.) and Anne Szender (Seattle, Wash.).
The second varsity 8 boat was scheduled to have Elyse Atkind (Needham, Mass.), Margaret Duggan (Bronxville, N.Y.), coxswain Valerie Friedman (Pennington, N.J.), Mariah Hudnut (Fort Collins, Colo.), Kathleen Jones (Hollis, N.H.), Dana Maglaris (New Canaan, Conn.), Allison Neumeister (Vernon, Vt.), Justine Scott (Spokane, Wash.) and Janet Weidner (West Simsbury, Conn.). Sharon McMonagle (Avon, N.J.), Ling U (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and coxswain Anne Feutz (Clayton, Mo.) made the trip as alternates.
Final team results: Ithaca 10, Smith 10, Trinity 11, Puget Sound 13, Williams 16, Colby 18….Ithaca wins national title by virtue of finishing ahead of Smith in Grand Final.
