Colby football defeats Hamilton, 35-0
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Sophomore quarterback Justin Smith
(Rockland/Rockland, Mass.) threw for 253 yards and four touchdown passes to
lead Colby College to a 35-0 victory over Hamilton College in New England
Small College Athletic Conference football Saturday at Seaverns Field.
The Mules (3-2) are 3-0 at home this season and have allowed just six
points in those games. Colby has not allowed a touchdown in the last nine
quarters on Seaverns Field.
Senior wide receiver Steve Markesich (Weymouth/South Weymouth, Mass.)
caught seven balls for 131 yards and one touchdown for Colby. First-year
running back Chris Bashaw (Wachusett/Rutland, Mass.) had 80 yards of
rushing and sophomore Nial DeMena (Scarborough/Scarborough, Maine) had 70
yards on just 11 carries. Bashaw also caught two passes for 37 yards.
Colby's defense is allowing just 9.2 points per game after the shutout.
Wayne Harrington (Rockland/Rockland, Mass.), the NESCAC Defensive Player of
the Week last week, recovered two fumbles and brought one of the fumbles
back 3 yards for the Mules' final touchdown.
After a scoreless opening quarter, Smith hit fullback Chris Duncombe
(Madison/Athens, Maine) on a 5-yard scoring pass with 12:58 to
intermission. With just 34 seconds left to halftime, Smith struck again
when he found wide receiver Jon Vacca (St. Sebastian's School/Quincy,
Mass.) on a 16-yard scoring strike for a 14-0 lead.
Markesich helped the Mules go up 21-0 with an 11-yard touchdown catch with
10:12 left in the third quarter. Smith then all but put the game away with
a 25-yard scoring play to senior Michael Tomich (Kinkaid School/Houston,
Texas).
Harrington added his fumble recovery for touchdown with 9:25 left on a play
started by a strong hit by Colby's Mike Poplaski (St. John's Prep/North
Reading, Mass.).
Josh Berman (Lyndon Institute/Lyndon, Vt.) led all tacklers with 12 stops
and had one fumble recovery. Mike Civitello (Notre Dame/Hamden, Conn.)
added 10 tackles and one interception, while Steve Kasperski (Naperville
North/Naperville, Ill.) had eight tackles.
Hamilton (1-4) quarterback Brandon Holtslag (Whitesboro/Whitesboro, N.Y.)
had 110 yards rushing on 19 carries, but the Mules held him to just 28
yards of passing.
