CIVITELLO BLOCKS EXTRA POINT TO GIVE COLBY 17-16 WIN OVER BOBCATS
LEWISTON, Maine (Oct. 30, 2004) Colby senior Mike Civitello blocked an
extra point attempt by Bates Tyler Schmelz with just 15 seconds to play,
keeping the Bobcats from tying the game to give the Mules a 17-16 win in a
New England Small College Athletic Conference football game on Garcelon
Field on Saturday afternoon.
Ê Ê Colby, now 4-2, will play for the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin when they face
the Polar Bears in Waterville on Nov. 13. Bates fell to 1-5 on the season.
Ê Ê Bates trailed 17-3 at the end of the third quarter, but rookie
quarterback Brandon Colon 08 (Manchester, N.H.) engineered two touchdown
drives to give the Bobcats the opportunity to tie the score.
Ê Ê Casey McCormick 08 (Keene, N.H.) gave Bates great field position with
an interception at the Colby 22 yard line, and Colon found fullback Ryan
Fitzpatrick 05 (Milton, Mass.) on the right side for a three-yard
touchdown pass to cut the lead to 17-10 with 11:49 to play.
Ê Ê Colby had the opportunity to take possession of the ball late in the
game to seal the win, but the Mules were flagged on pass interference
penalties twice on fourth down plays to extend Bates final drive. Colon
cut the lead to one by leaping over the line of scrimmage and holding the
ball over the plane of the end zone on fourth and goal from the one-yard
line with just 15 seconds remaining.
Ê Ê Colby took a 7-0 lead when Chris Bashaw scored on a four-yard
touchdown run up the middle to cap a seven-play, 91-yard drive. Bashaw
had runs of 41- and 24-yards on the drive.
Ê Ê After Schmelz 06 (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) hit a career long 36-yard
field goal late with three seconds left in the second quarter for Bates,
Colby increased its lead to 14-3 when Bashaw scored on a 15-yard screen
pass from Justin Smith with just over five minutes remaining in the third
quarter. John Goss added an 18-yard field goal late in the third quarter
to give the Mules a 17-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Ê Ê Colon broke the school record for completions in a game, completing
28-of-52 pass attempts for 294 yards and a touchdown. Dylan MacNamara had
a career high nine catches for 93 yards, while Matt Orlando 05 (South
Portland, Maine) had eight catches for 85 yards, giving him 102 for his
career at Bates. Ron DiGravio 08 (Farmington, Maine), the NESCAC Rookie
of the Week last week, led the Bates rushing attack with 58 yards on 25
carries.
Ê Ê Bashaw finished the game with 102 yards on 21 carries, while Smith
was 15-for-28 passing for 154 yards. Jon Vacca had five receptions for 61
yards, while Chris Duncombe caught five balls for 26 yards.
Ê Ê Mike Horan 05 (Stoughton, Mass.) had nine tackles and broke up one
pass to lead the Bates defense. Dave Bodger 06 (Lewiston, Maine) added
eight tackles, while Kevin Madden 05 (Concord, N.H.) and Kevin Reyes 08
(North Andover, Mass.) joined McCormack with interceptions for the Bobcats.
Ê Ê Steve Kasperski led the Colby defense with 12 tackles, while Wayne
Harrington added nine. Peter Sherman had eight tackles with three for a
loss and one quarterback sack. Brian Liberty had eight tackles and an
interception, while Civitello added eight tackles to his game-winning
blocked kick.
Ê Ê Colby will face Tufts on the road next week, while Bates travels to
Brunswick to play Bowdoin.
