COLBY FOOTBALL SHUTS OUT WESLEYAN, 23-0
WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College defense had six interceptions and
quarterback Justin Smith (Rockland/Rockland, Mass.) threw for 192 yards
and a pair of touchdowns as the Mules took a 23-0 victory over Wesleyan
University in New England Small College Athletic Conference football
Saturday at Seaverns Field.
Wesleyan (2-1) came into the game averaging 442 yards of total offense in
its first two games, including 388 by the pass. Colby's defense held the
Cardinals to just 211 total yards with the six interceptions and six sacks.
Colby co-captain Steve Kasperski (Naperville North/Naperville, Ill.) led
the defense from his middle linebacker position with nine tackles, two
interceptions, and three pass break-ups. Josh Berman (Lyndon
Institute/Lyndson, Vt.) also had two interceptions. Wayne Harrington
(Rockland/Rockland, Mass.), who had seven tackles, and Brian Liberty
(Trinity/Hollis, N.H.) also had interceptions.
Smith completed 17 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. He hooked up
with Chris Duncombe (Madison/Athens, Maine) on an 11-yard scoring play in
the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. John Goss (St.
John's-Shrewsbury/Shrewsbury, Mass.) added two of his three field goals
from 30 and 37 yards in the second quarter to give the Mules a 13-0 lead
at the break.
Smith put Colby (2-1) up 20-0 when he connected with Jon Vacca (St.
Sebastian's/Quincy, Mass.) on an 8-yard scoring play in the third quarter.
Goss booted a 45-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for the final
points of the game. Goss had a huge game for the Mules, making all three
of his field goals attempts, both extra points, and he punted for a
37.2-yard average.
Nial DeMena (Scarborough/Scarborough, Maine) had 58 yards rushing on 15
carries. Roddy Ames (New Hampton School/Cotuit, Mass.) caught three balls
for 70 yards and Vacca added three catches for 48 yards.
Wesleyan running back Phil Banks (West Haven/West Haven, Conn.) had 91
yards on 19 rushes, while quarterback Zach Canter (BB&N/Chestnut Hill,
Mass.) completed 13 passes for 116 yards but had the six interceptions.
Ê Ê Ê Ê Colby will play at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Amherst. Wesleyan
comes back up to Maine for a 1 p.m. game at Bates College.
