COLBY FOOTBALL SHUTS OUT BOWDOIN, 23-0 (Mules win CBB title for second straight year)
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College's three senior linebackers all had big
games and first-year running back Chris Bashaw (Wachusett Regional/Rutland,
Mass.) rushed for 130 yards to lead the Colby College football team to a
23-0 victory over Bowdoin College in the final game of the season Saturday
at Seaverns Field.
The Mules finished the season at 6-2 under first-year head coach Ed
Mestieri and won the CBB (Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) Championship for the second
straight year. Colby has either won or shared the title with its Maine
rivals in 13 of the last 17 years.
Colby finished the year 4-0 at home and allowed just six points. The Mules'
defense did not allow a score in 13 straight quarters at home dating back
to a 23-6 win over Middlebury on October 2.
Wayne Harrington (Rockland/Rockland, Mass.), a senior linebacker, had 15
tackles for the Mules. Steve Kasperski (Naperville North/Naperville, Ill.)
added 13 tackles and Mike Booras (Thayer Academy/Scituate, Mass.) added
eight stops from their linebacker spots. Defensive back Mike Civitello
(Notre Dame/Hamden, Conn.) added six tackles and one interception.
Bashaw rushed 30 times for 130 yards, including 107 yards on 19 carries in
the opening half. Justin Smith (Rockland/Rockland, Mass.) completed 15
passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns, while senior Michael Tomich
(Kinkaid School/Houston, Texas) had three catches for 51 yards.
Bowdoin running back Rob Patchett (Boston College HS/Pembroke, Mass.) had
27 carries for 91 yards for the Polar Bears (2-6). Brian Durant (Boston
College HS/Dorchester, Mass.) caught six balls for 56 yards.
Tomich had a 39-yard touchdown reception from Smith for Colby's first
points in the second quarter. John Goss (St. John's-Shrewsbury/Shrewsbury,
Mass.) added a 32-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead at intermission.
Nial DeMena (Scarborough/Scarborough, Maine) had a 1-yard scoring run in
the third quarter and Smith hit Roddy Ames (New Hampton School/Cotuit,
Mass.) on a 12-yard pass play in the fourth quarter for the final points.
Shaun Kezer (Mansfield/Mansfield, Mass.) had 15 tackles for Bowdoin.
