COLBY FOOTBALL SACKS TUFTS, 17-3
SOMERVILLE, Mass. --- The Colby College defense had nine sacks and the
offense got two more touchdowns from Chris Bashaw in taking a 17-3 victory
over Tufts University on Saturday in New England Small College Athletic
Conference football at Ellis Oval Stadium.
Colby's defense had 13 tackles for loss, including the nine sacks.
Linebacker Wayne Harrington and defensive end Peter Sherman each had three
sacks. The Mules held Tufts (2-5) to 200 yards of total offense while
lowering their scoring defense to just 9.3 points per game.
Bashaw, a first-year running back, scored his fifth and sixth touchdowns of
the season in the third quarter to put the game away. He rushed 34 times
for 92 yards.
Colby (5-2) led 3-0 at intermission after John Goss kicked a 26-yard field
goal with 10:31 left to halftime. The score was set up after co-captain
Mike Booras recovered a fumble on the Tufts 16-yard line. Goss is 8-for-11
in field goals this year.
The Mules went 51 yards in 10 plays to score their first touchdown with
7:49 left on a Bashaw 2-yard run.
Colby put the game away on Bashaw's 1-yard run with 3:29 remaining in the
third quarter. Mule quarterback Justin Smith hit wide receiver Jon Vacca on
a 39-yard pass play to get the ball to the Tufts 7-yard line.
Tufts broke Colby's shutout when Phil Scialdoni booted a 43-yard field goal
with 14:07 left in the game. The Mules did not score after the field goal,
but used drives of 13 and 11 plays to run out most of the time.
Colby did not turn the ball over as Smith completed 15 passes for 164
yards. Vacca had five catches for 59 yards and Steve Markesich caught five
balls for 48 yards.
Harrington had 10 tackles to lead Colby's defense. Josh Berman had seven
stops, Steve Kasperski made six tackles, and Tyler Hales had one interception.
Steve Cincotta led Tufts with 15 carries for 93 yards, while receiver Kevin
Holland had five catches for 50 yards.
Colby finishes the season next Saturday at home against rival Bowdoin
College at 12:30 p.m. The game will decide the coveted CBB
(Colby-Bates-Bowdoin) Championship after the Polar Bears took a 21-0
victory over Bates on Saturday. The Mules defeated Bates last week.
