Colby football loses opener to Williams
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. --- Colby College hurt its own cause with some untimely errors in falling 21-10 to Williams College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference football opener Saturday on Weston Field.
Williams (1-0) blocked a Colby field goal, a punt that turned into two points for a safety, and the Mules hurt themselves early in the fourth quarter with a penalty on the Eph's 1-yard line. Colby ended up with a field goal instead of a possible touchdown.
Williams opened up a 9-0 halftime lead and then went ahead 15-0 when Brendan Fulmer hit Jon Drenckhahn on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 8:45 left in the third quarter.
Colby (0-1) battled back when Nial DeMena (Scarborough, Maine) scored on an 8-yard touchdown run with 3:34 left in the third quarter.
The Mules trailed 15-7 when they had the penalty on the Williams 1-yard line. Instead of having a chance to tie the game with a touchdown and a two-point conversion, Colby settled for a 21-yard field goal from kicker John Goss (Shrewsbury, Mass.) with 13:06 left in the contest.
Williams sealed the win just a few minutes later on an eight-play, 80-yard drive that ended on a 2-yard touchdown run by Cory Catelli with 10:56 remaining.
Justin Smith (Rockland, Mass.) was 20-for-41 for 169 yards for Colby. Tom Wilson caught seven balls for 54 yards, Jon Vacca had four catches for 29 yards, and Steve Markesich had three catches for 46 yards.
Josh Berman (Madison, Conn.) was credited with eight tackles for the Colby defense. Wayne Harrington (Rockland, Mass.) made seven stops, including two for loss.
Colby has its home opener next Saturday against Middlebury College at 1 p.m. Middlebury took a 31-17 win over Bowdoin on Saturday.
