Colby football players earn honors
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College football players John Goss (St. John's-Shrewsbury/Shrewsbury, Mass.), Wayne Harrington (Rockland/Rockland, Mass.), Peter Sherman (Rye Country Day/Larchmont, N.Y.), Daniel Oliphant (Chatham/Chatham, N.J.), Mike Poplaski (St. John's Prep/North Reading, Mass.), and Mike Civitello (Notre Dame HS/Hamden, Conn.) were all named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Conference team.
Goss and Harrington were also named to the New England Football Writers Select Division II/III All-Star Team.
Goss, a second team NESCAC selection last year at kicker, made the conference first team along with Harrington, Oliphant, and Sherman. Civitello and Poplaski each made the second team.
Goss led the Mules in scoring with 44 points after going 9-for-13 in field goal attempts and 17-for-19 in extra point tries. The junior was 8-for-8 inside 40 yards and one of his misses was at an attempt of more than 50 yards. Goss has made 19 field goals in his three years at Colby and holds school records for longest kick (49 yards), field goals in a season (9), and in a game (4). Goss also punted for a 37.5-yard average and had 12 kicks inside the 20-yard line.
Harrington, a senior linebacker, led Colby in total tackles (79), tackles for loss (18), fumble recoveries (3), and pass break-ups (6). He was second on the team in sacks with four and added one interception. Harrington was fifth in the NESCAC in tackles per game (9.9).
Sherman, a senior defensive end, led NCAA Division III in forced fumbles per game. He had five forced fumbles and also led Colby in sacks with 5.5. Sherman had 14 tackles for loss out of his 30 tackles this season. Sherman has been chosen to play in the 2004 USA Aztec Bowl in Cancun, Mexico. He is one of 42 NCAA Division III players who will play in a game against top college players from Mexico.
Oliphant, a junior offensive tackle, was one of five offensive linemen selected to the NESCAC first team. He won the Wadsworth Award last season as Colby's most improved offensive player.
Poplaski, a sophomore defensive tackle, was a presence in the middle of Colby's defensive line. He had 25 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles. Poplaski was a big reason why Colby was second in the conference in rushing defense (105 yards per game).
Civitello, a senior defensive back, was third for Colby in tackles (51) and had two interceptions. He also made one of the biggest single plays of the year, blocking an extra point attempt with 15 seconds left in a 17-16 win at Bates College. Civitello, a hard hitter, blocked eight kicks in the last three years.
