Colby basketball great Hancock to be inducted into NE Basketball Hall of Fame
KINGSTON, R.I. --- Colby College men's basketball great Matt Hancock will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame this Friday in a ceremony from 7 to 9 p.m. at the University of Rhode Island's Ryan Center.
Hancock, the only three-time All-American in Colby basketball history, is the sixth Colby graduate or coach to be inducted. The New England Basketball Hall of Fame has had three induction ceremonies.
Current Colby head basketball coach Dick Whitmore, long-time Colby assistant coach John Mitchell, Gene Hunter '48, Ted Shiro '51, and Brad Moore '75 were inducted in the last two years.
Hancock '90 is Colby's all-time leading scorer with 2,678 career points from 1987 to 1990. He played in 104 games, had 744 field goals, 198 3-point shots, and 792 free throws. Hancock also holds school records for points in a season (853 in 1987-88), points in a game (49 twice), points in a half (30), points averaged in a season (31.6 in 1987-88), points averaged in a career (26.2), field goals in a season (275 in 1987-88), free throws made in a season (247 in 1987-88), free throws made in a career, free throws made in a game (21, 1988 vs. Thomas), consecutive free throws in a game (20, 1989 vs. Husson), consecutive free throws in a season (33 in 1989), and free throw percentage in a season (91.5 in 1987-88).
Hancock earned All-America honors during the 1987-88, 1988-89, and 1989-90 seasons.
