Men's basketball at 7-1 after win over Bowdoin
BRUNSWICK, Maine --- The Colby College men's basketball team used a 13-1 second-half run to go from a one-point deficit to an 11 point lead and an eventual 82-64 victory over Bowdoin College on Saturday in Brunswick. The Mules are off to a 7-1 start to the 2004-05 campaign, while the Polar Bears fall to 5-4 on the season.
Bowdoin held a 38-33 halftime advantage, but Colby raced out of the gate in the second half on an 11-2 spurt to take a four point edge just three minutes into the frame. Bowdoin regained the lead on a three-pointer from Andrew Sargeantson and a jumper from Jac Arbour, 50-49, but Colby responded with the decisive run over the next six minutes.
Andrew Jenkins started the run with a hoop-and-harm to give Colby a 52-50 lead and after a pair of free-throws extended the lead to 54-50, a three-pointer from Mike Rutherford made it 57-50. Tom Nale collected a steal and went the other way for a layup to make it 59-50. After a Bowdoin free throw, Michael Westbrooks capped the spurt with a trifecta from Michael Westbrooks to make it 62-51 Mules with eight minutes left. Colby would extend the lead to as many 20 points before taking the 18-point win.
Colby had four players in double figures led by Jenkins' 26. Nale had 14, while McGowan had 10. Westbrooks had 13 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.
