COLBY MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS MIDDLEBURY(Mules get seventh seed in NESCAC tourney; Whitmore get 550th win)
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. --- The Colby College men's basketball team received 20
points apiece from Drew Cohen and Patrick McGowan in taking an easy 83-66
victory over Middlebury College on Saturday in New England Small College
Athletic Conference play.
The Mules finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the league at 4-5
with Wesleyan University and Williams College. Colby got the seventh seed
and will play at second-seeded Tufts University in a NESCAC quarterfinal
game next Saturday at 3 p.m. Wesleyan earned the fifth seed by winning a
tiebreaker over Colby and Williams thanks to a better record against the
top four seeds in the tourney. Williams then earned the sixth seed because
of its head-to-head victory over the Mules on Friday night.
Colby head coach Dick Whitmore earned his 550th career victory. He has a
record of 550-276 in his 34th year with the Mules.
Cohen shot 10-for-15 from the field and added six rebounds and a pair of
blocked shots. McGowan was 4-for-8 from 3-point range and had five
rebounds. Cohen played just 22 minutes and McGowan saw 23 minutes of action
because of the blowout. The Mules led 54-24 at halftime.
Nick Farrell had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists for Colby
(13-7). Pat Featherston and Andrew Jenkins both had seven points.
