Colby men's hockey upsets top-ranked Middlebury

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Nick Bayley (Cambridge, Ontario) got the game-winning goal with 10:03 left in the third period and then added an empty net insurance goal in powering the Colby College men's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over NCAA Division III defending national champion Middlebury College on Saturday at Alfond Arena.

Middlebury (9-2-1, 6-2) came into the weekend top-ranked in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III poll. The Panthers, though, fell to Bowdoin College on Friday and ended its trip to Maine with a loss to the Mules.

Colby, which took a 5-2 win over Williams College on Friday, improved to 9-2-1 overall and 7-2 in league play.

Bayley scored off assists from Joel Morash (Liverpool, Nova Scotia) and Jared Gordon (Bangor, Maine) at 9:57 of the third period. He then sealed the victory with the empty net goal off assists from Eric Molander (Yarmouth, Maine) and Patrick Walsh (Easton, Conn.). Bayley, who led the NESCAC in scoring at the start of the week, has 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points this season.

Chris Ries (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stopped 24 shots to earn his first shutout of the season. Ries has an 8-1-1 record this year and is 34-14-7 in his Colby career.

Middlebury goalie Yen-I Chen (Rigaud, Quebec) made 33 saves and allowed just the first goal. Chen stopped all 14 shots he faced in the second period.
