Tufts goalie stops 60 shots to beat Colby men's hockey
MALDEN, Mass. --- First-year goalie James Kalec (East Amherst, NY) set a Tufts University record with 60 saves as the Jumbos defeated 13th-ranked Colby College, 4-1, in NESCAC men's hockey action Friday night at Valley Forum II.
The visiting Mules (9-3-1, 7-3 NESCAC/ECAC) were coming off a 2-0 victory against defending national champion Middlebury College last Saturday. The Jumbos, now 7-7 overall and 4-6 in the NESCAC/ECAC, won their third straight game by scoring four unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0.
Kalec stopped all 20 shots fired at him, and Colby goalie Chris Ries (Pittsburgh, PA) stopped the six shots he faced for a scoreless first period.
Senior Joel Morash (Liverpool, NS) opened the scoring at 9:22 of the middle stanza for a 1-0 Colby lead. The Jumbos answered with goals by sophomore Matt Dalton (Duxbury, MA) at 13:49 and by classmate John Murphy (Charlestown, MA) at 16:07 to lead 2-1 at the end of two. Dalton's was his first of the season.
Tufts extended its lead to 3-1 on the eighth goal of the season by Greg O'Connell (Cohasset, MA) early in the third period. With Kalec continuing to stone the Mules, junior co-captain Ken Cleary (Cambridge, MA) had an nassisted goal at 17:52 of the third for Tufts.
Kalec's 60 saves surpassed Jumbo Dave Wilson's 59 stops against Boston University during the 1955-56 season as the Tufts record. Ries finished with 21 saves for Colby.
