Colby men's hockey loses opener

MANCHESTER, N.H. --- (November 19, 2004) St. Anselm tallied six goals including four in the second period en route to a 6-3 victory over Colby in their season opener at Sullivan Arena Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, the Hawks took the first lead of the game when Junior Defenseman Mike Walsh (Milton, Mass.) snuck the puck past the Mules' goalie Ben Grandjean (Waterford, Conn.) for the first Hawks' goal of the 2004-05 season. Just 1:30 later after a Hawks interference violation Patrick Walsh (Easton, Conn.) evened the score with a power play goal. Saint Anselm came right back and took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play and a Mules' line change as Bostjan Kolaric (Ljubljana, Slovenia) skated past the defense and the puck found the net to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. With just under five minutes left in the period, Walsh tied the game again with his second power play goal of the game. The end of the period belonged to the Hawks as they got goals from Chris O'Brien (Watertown, Mass.) and Danny Ohlson (York, Maine) less than a minute apart to take a 4-2 lead after the second period.

Colby cut the lead back to one midway through the third period, but that was as close as they would get as the Hawks answered just one minute later on a goal by Josh Hechter (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and then Mike Curtis (Hanover, Mass.) added an empty net goal late in the game to give the Hawks a 6-3 win. Hawks' goalie Jim Merola (N. Providence, R.I.) came up big in the third period with 20 of his 34 saves. Saint Anselm will be back at home tomorrow for an afternoon matchup with Bowdoin at 3 p.m.
