Bowdoin men's hockey starts strong to beat Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The ninth-ranked Bowdoin College men's hockey team scored the opening three goals of the game and then hung on for a 5-3 victory over Colby College in men's hockey Tuesday night at Alfond Arena.

The Polar Bears (13-3-3) scored two goals in the opening 6:15 of play for a 2-0 lead at the break. James Gadon (Toronto, Ontario) put Bowdoin up for good at 5:46 and then Bobby Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) scored just 29 seconds later for a 2-0 lead.

Bowdoin went up 3-0 only 32 seconds into the second period on a goal by Jon Landry (Montreal, Quebec).

The Mules (12-6-1) got going just 30 seconds later when team captain Patrick Walsh (Easton, Conn.) scored. The Polar Bears, though, went up by three goals again at 12:03 on a goal by Greg McConnell (Charlottetown, PEI).

Colby battled back and got some momentum when Josh Reber (Edina, Minn.) scored with just 28 seconds left in the second period. The Mules then made it a 4-3 game when Joel Morash (Liverpool, Nova Scotia) scored at 6:29 of the final period.

Bowdoin got the game-clinching goal with 2:25 remaining when McConnell tallied again.

This game did not count in the league standings. Colby's 5-4 overtime win over Bowdoin earlier in the year was the league contest.

Colby plays host to Southern Maine at 7 p.m. Friday.
