Conn College tops Colby in men's lacrosse

NEW LONDON, Conn. ---- Senior midfielder Dave Schwartz (East Dix Hills, N.Y.) exploded with four goals, leading Connecticut College (7-5, 5-2) to a 9-4 victory over Colby College (2-9, 0-7) on soggy Freeman Field Saturday afternoon. Junior Joe Higgins (Setauket, N.Y.) tallied three goals for the Camels, who won their fifth straight victory and fourth consecutive NESCAC contest.

Freshman Craig Audin (Sudbury, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist and Topher Grossman (Villanova, Pa.) stopped 14 shots in goal for the hosts.

Rob Dudley (New Canaan, Conn.) dished out two assists for the visiting Mules. Freshman goalie Jeff Miller (Marshfield, Mass.) made nine saves in goal for Colby.

The Camels jumped on top early, scoring three times in the opening 3:54 to take a 3-0 lead. Colby got on the board when Zach Goodnough (Brunswick, Maine) scored at 10:14. But Schwartz netted the next two goals just 41 seconds apart for the hosts. Craig Audin assisted on the second goal at 5:18 and the Camels enjoyed a 5-1 lead.

Colby rallied and fought to stay in the game. The Mules received a needed goal from Adam Kirk (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) with 4:07 left in the first and it was a 5-2 game after one quarter. In the second quarter, Colby continued to narrow the gap. Ryan Scott (Columbia, N.J.) made it a 5-3 game and Dan Schupack (Cheshire, Conn.) cut the lead to one, 5-4, with just 61 seconds to play in the half.

But in the third quarter, the Camels were just too strong for their opposition. Schwartz netted his fourth goal of the afternoon with 9:07 to play in the quarter, making it a 6-4 game. Chas McLaughlin put one in just 56 seconds later, and CC led 7-4. With 6:41 remaining, Joe Higgins made it an 8-4 game. Higgins would complete the hat-trick with an insurance goal in the fourth quarter, and the Camels were able to easily hang on for the 9-4 victory.
