GORHAM, Maine --- Junior Monty Hankin (Canandaigua, N.Y./ Canandaigua Academy) scored on a header in the 76th minute as Colby College earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw with the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
The draw gives the Mules a 2-2-1 overall mark while the Huskies remained unbeaten with a 5-0-3 mark.
After a scoreless first half, Southern Maine took the lead 11 seconds into the second half as sophomore Adam Bial (Wenham, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham HS) and senior Andy Budelman (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding HS) combined for the goal. Bial took a pass form Budelman and hit the crossbar with his shot, but Budelman was right on the spot to head in the rebound for his eighth goal of the season.
The lead stood for 30 minutes until the Mules took advantage of a restart on the left wing. The ball was served into the box where sophomore Dan Kiernan (Brookline, Mass./Roxbury Latin HS) headed it back across the goal mouth to an unmarked Hankin who headed it into the open net.
Senior goalkeeper Brian Davidson (Needham, Mass./Loomis Chaffee) had two saves for Colby while his sophomore counterpart at the other end, Chris Willard (Hampton, Conn./Parish Hills HS), was credited with five saves.
Colby had a 20-8 advantage in shots, many from long range, and a slim 4-3 margin in corner kicks.
Colby will host Middlebury College for a NESCAC match on Saturday (11:30 a.m.).
