A. Lathrop fifth for women, Saunders sixth for men in giant slalom
RUMFORD, Maine -- With Jenny Lathrop and Warner Nickerson racing in Europe, the Colby College alpine ski teams still managed to start the winter carnival season off on a fine note at the Bates Carnival at Sunday River on Friday.
Nordic skiing was postponed until Saturday because of the bitter cold conditions.
Abbi Lathrop, Jenny's twin sister, finished in fifth place for the Colby women with a two-run total time of 2:03.01. She was third after her first run of 1:01.80, but slipped back to fifth after a 1:01.21 second run.
University of Vermont's Jamie Kingsbury won the giant slalom with a total time of 2:01.67. Christin Lathrop, the older sister of Colby's Lathrops, finished in third place in 2:02.87 for Dartmouth College.
Nicole Wessen placed 16th for the Colby women in 2:05.78. Siri Ashton was 28th in 2:10.13 and Ashley Best was right behind her in 29th at 2:10.16.
Robert Saunders placed sixth for the Colby men with runs of 59.16 and 58.02 for a total time of 1:57.18. Dartmouth's Evan Weiss had a 1:55.47 winning time.
Jody Centauro was 24th for Colby in 2:00.90 and Jack Mallia took 32nd in 2:02.10.
Colby is currently fifth out of 10 teams in overall score with 115 points heading into slalom runs Saturday. The women's team finished in fifth place in the giant slalom with 63 points and the men were sixth with 52 points.
