Lathrop third for women, Nickerson fourth for men at St. Michael's
SMUGGLERS NOTCH, Vt. --- Abbi Lathrop (North Conway, N.H.) placed third for the Colby College women's alpine ski team and Warner Nickerson (Tilton, N.H.) was fourth for the men in the giant slalom at the Saint Michael's Winter Carnival on Friday.
Lathrop helped the women's giant slalom team place fourth with runs of 53.86 and 54.19 for a total time of 1:48.05. University of Vermont's Jamie Kingsbury (1:47.52) and Amy Cochran (1:47.61) finished ahead of Lathrop.
Nicole Wessen (Rockland, Mass.) placed 23rd in 1:51.82 and Siri Ashton (East Burke, Vt.) took 33rd in 1:55.09 for the Colby women.
Nickerson, who just traveled back from Austria after winning two silver medals at the World University Games, tied for fourth place in 1:44.55. Nickerson had the second-best second run at 51.93 after going 52.62 in his opening run. Dartmouth's Evan Weiss won the competition in 1:44.31.
Robert Saunders (Park City, Utah) gave the Colby men two top 10 finishes by taking 10th place in 1:45.33 to help the Mules' giant slalom team place third. Rory Kelly (Charlottesville, Va.) was 26th in 1:48.12, Jody Centauro (Beaconsfield, Quebec) took 29th in 1:49.48 and Ryan Praskievicz (Bethany, Conn.) was 32nd in 1:50.05.
In Nordic skiing, Kris Dobie (Walpole, N.H.) placed 25th in the men's 10-kilometer race in 31:23.7. Fred Bailey (Andover, Maine) was 32nd for the Mules in 31:44.6.
Katie Klepinski (St. Louis Park, Minn.) led the Colby women by placing 38th in the 5-kilometer race in 19:01.2. Hillary Easter (Jay, Maine) took 42nd in 19:05.8.
With more racing set for Saturday, Colby's overall team score is 261 points for seventh place out of 13 teams.
