Colby field hockey player Smith named NESCAC Player of Week
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College field hockey player Lauren Smith (Thayer Academy/Cohasset, Mass.) earned New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week honors Monday for helping the Mules to two wins by shutout last week.
Smith, a senior defender and co-captain, scored the lone goal and helped the Mules post the shutout with her defensive work in a 1-0 NESCAC win over Bowdoin College on Saturday. Smith, who makes the initial pass on penalty corners, scored off a corner when she knocked in a rebound with 5:27 left to halftime. Bowdoin had 12 penalty corners in the second half and pushed hard for the tying goal, but Smith and Colby's defense toughened up and kept the Polar Bears off the scoreboard.
The veteran defense of Smith, Kristin Putnam (Messalonskee/Oakland, Maine), Melissa Mullen (Pope John XXIII/Green Township, N.J.), and goaltender Molly Rice (South Portland/South Portland, Maine) have not allowed a goal in regulation play in Colby's opening three games. Colby's defense is first in the conference in goals against average at 0.32.
The Mules (2-1) also took a 3-0 victory over Thomas College last Monday and opened the season with a 1-0 overtime loss at Tufts University.
Despite playing defense, Smith has three goals and six assists for 12 career points.
