Miller wins 50 butterfly at NESCAC swim meet
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Laura Miller (Manchester, N.H.) won the 50-yard butterfly to help Colby College get off to a solid start at the first day of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Middlebury College on Friday night.
Miller had a pool record time of 25.49 earlier in the day in the morning session. She holds the NESCAC record in the event at 25.31.
The Colby women's 400 medley relay team set a school record by more than two seconds and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships. Beth Foxwell (Indianapolis, Ind.), Kelly Norsworthy (West Hartford, Conn.), Miller and Meg Vallaly (Lake Forest, Ill.) had a time of 3:55.58 in the morning session for the NCAA 'A' cut qualifying time. The women took third place in the final with a time of 3:57.16.
Norsworthy had an outstanding day in her first NESCAC Championship meet. Besides the relay success, she also placed second in the 50 breaststroke in a school record time of 29.56. Norsworthy also set a school record in the 200 individual medley. Since she officially made the NCAA meet in the relay, Norsworthy will be able to swim in the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke because she has 'B' cuts in all three races.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Foxwell, Miller, Vallaly and Lilli Higgins (Brookline, Mass.) bettered Colby's school record with a time of 1:36.88 in taking fourth place in the final.
Vallaly placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.51) and Melissa Plante (Fayetteville, N.Y.) was eighth in the 50-yard backstroke (28.93). Annie Muir (Springfield, Va.) took eighth in the 50 breaststroke (31.61).
Colby is in seventh place out of 11 teams after one day of competition. However, the Mules are just 50 points out of fourth place with two days of events remaining.
