Ireland wins 50 freestyle for Colby men at NESCAC swim meet
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Tom Ireland won the 50-yard freestyle for Colby College on the opening day of competition at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday night.
Ireland had a time of 21.13 in the championship final to edge Amherst's Bryan Woo, who had a 21.30. Ireland was even faster in the preliminary race earlier in the day with a 21.11, an NCAA 'B' cut qualifying time.
Ireland helped Colby to 303.5 points and take sixth place in the team standings heading into two more days of competition.
Jabez Dewey took third place in the 50-yard backstroke in 24.28 for Colby. Evan Mullin placed seventh in the 500 freestyle in 4:43.26, while Jared Alder was 11th in the 50 freestyle (22.05) and 14th in the 50 breaststroke (27.90, 27.84 prelim). Chris DeSantis was also 11th in the 50 breaststroke in 27.73 (27.60 prelim). Meanwhile, Justin Dubois took 13th in the 200 individual medley in 1:59.14 (1:58.75 prelim).
Colby's 400 medley relay team was sixth in 3:34.23, while the 200 freestyle relay team placed seventh in 1:25.85.
