COLBY SKIER NICKERSON GETS SILVER FOR COMBINED, SIXTH IN SLALOM

Colby College All-American skier Warner Nickerson (New Hampton School/Tilton, N.H.) took sixth place in the slalom, but came away with another silver medal for men's combined at the 2005 FIS World University Games in Innsbruck, Austria on Friday night.

Nickerson's combined medal came from his four top 10 finishes in the four alpine skiing disciplines. He earned a silver medal in the giant slalom, was fourth in the Super G and took ninth in the downhill. Austria's Dominik Schweiger won the men's combined.

Nickerson becomes the first double medallist for the United States squad (alpine and Nordic) in World University Games competition since 1997. He is the first alpine skiing double medallist since 1993.

The field of 108 skiers had a soft course with ruts and poor visibility from rain earlier in the day. Czech Republic's Martin Vrablik won the slalom with a combined time of 1:36.84. Nickerson's slalom time was unavailable.

Nickerson, a senior at Colby, was one of six male skiers competing for the United States team. Charles Christianson of Williams College was fifth in men's combined and Roger Brown of Dartmouth College placed sixth.

Nickerson's first Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) ski carnival will be at Saint Michael's on January 28-29. Nickerson, despite missing time with an injury, won five EISA races last year and earned All-America honors in the giant slalom at the NCAA Division I Championships.
