Women's basketball falls to top-ranked Bowdoin
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Marisa Berne posted 13 points, nine boards and three assists off the bench in a 64-37 victory over Colby on Saturday in Brunswick. The top-ranked Polar Bear women's basketball team extends the nation's longest home winning streak to 47 games, and improves to 7-0 on the year. Colby drops to 3-5 with the defeat.
Bowdoin opened the contest on an 8-0 run as Vanessa Russell and Alison Smith both connected on three-pointers, forcing a Colby timeout just two minutes into the game. The Mules chipped away at the lead and closed to within four points, at 12-8 on a jumper by Kathleen Nicholson at 15:03 into the first half. But that was as close as the Mules would come as Bowdoin scampered on a 13-1 spurt keyed by another Russell trifecta and back-to-back jumpers by Berne. Bowdoin led 35-21 at intermission and extended their advantage to 27 points in the closing minutes, cruising to victory.
Turnovers proved to be the difference as the Polar Bears forced the Mules into 24 turnovers and held Colby to just 25% shooting for the game. Colby was led by 11 points and 12 rebounds from Wendy Bonner and 10 points and 12 boards from Katie McCabe.
