CONN COLLEGE TAKES NESCAC WIN OVER COLBY IN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
NEW LONDON, Conn. --- Sophomore Casey Thran (Dalton, Penn.) poured in 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, leading Connecticut College (9-11, 1-6) to a 59-45 victory over Colby College (5-14, 1-5) at Luce Fieldhouse Friday night. Freshman Katy Serafin (Carmel, N.Y.) chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Camels. Freshman Kate Kenly (Boxford, Mass.) added nine points on 3-for-4 three-point shooting for Connecticut College.
Freshman Katie McCabe (Watertown, Conn.) finished with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Colby. Senior Wendy Bonner (Lexington, Mass.) contributed 10 points and nine rebounds for the Mules.
Colby took an early 14-9 lead on a field goal scored by Regina Wohl (Westbrook, Maine) with 11:27 to play in the half. Later on in the half with the game tied at 20 and 5:08 remaining, the Camels pulled away from the Mules with a 12-to-0 run over 4:02 to build a 32-20 lead. Three-pointers from Kate Kenly and Lindsay Michel (West Haven, Conn.) keyed the rally. Connecticut College carried a 34-22 lead into the break.
Colby opened the second half with an 8-0 run and trailed by just four, 34-30, with 16:02 to go. Kate McCabe sparked the Mules with two field goals in the low post during the run. The Camels clamped down defensively and used the inside scoring of Thran to put together a 7-0 run midway through the half, building a 48-34 lead with 8:03 remaining in the contest. Colby was able to close the lead to nine points on a pair of free throws from Regina Wohl with 1:54 remaining, but the Camels were able to hold on for the 59-45 victory.
