Colby gives top-ranked Middlebury a fight in loss
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Colby College women's hockey team gave top-ranked Middlebury College a fight, but the Panthers held on for a 5-3 victory on Saturday night.
Heather DeVito had two goals for Colby and Jennifer McAleer added two assists. Michele Barmash had the other goal for Colby, which was tied 1-1 after the first period and only trailed 4-3 Devito scored a shorthanded goal 7:49 left in the game.
Colby goalie Genevieve Triganne kept Colby (5-9-3) in the game with 44 saves.
Middlebury head coach Bill Mandigo became the all-time leader in wins
among all NCAA women's hockey coaches. The 17-year head coach now holds a career mark of 295-82-11 (.774),
surpassing John Marchetti's 294 wins amassed at Providence and Yale from
'81-'02 (294-173-26 - .623).
Middlebury scored three unanswered goals in the second period on its way
to the win. Lorna Gifis led the Middlebury attack with a pair of goals,
while Abby Kurtz-Phelan had a goal and an assist.
