Eighth-ranked Colby women's lacrosse stops No. 15 Trinity

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Colby College goaltender Catharine O'Brien (Reading, Vt.) stopped 20 shots and Emma Miller (Wellesley, Mass.) had three goals to power the eighth-ranked Colby College women's lacrosse team to a 9-5 victory over 15th-ranked Trinity College on Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

Colby improves to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Trinity falls to 8-5 and 2-5 in league play.

O'Brien and Colby's defense did the job on Trinity's Beatrice Gratry (Hunting Valley, Ohio), who came into the game with 62 goals and 13 assists for 75 points. Gratry got her only point of the game on a goal just 2:15 into the first half for a 1-0 Bantam lead, but then was held scoreless the rest of the game.

After Gratry's goal, Colby went on a 5-0 scoring run to take a 5-1 lead. The Mules took a 6-3 advantage into halftime.

Trinity got as close as 7-5 with 22:35 remaining in the game on a goal by Emily Allen (Penfield, N.Y.). Colby, though, got a goal from Courtney Drake (Falmouth, Maine) with 17:15 remaining and Miller added an insurance goal with 56.9 seconds left.

Elizabeth Ghilardi (Norwell, Mass.) added two goals for the Mules. Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.) had one goal and one assist, while Allie Libby (Needham, Mass.) and Kelsey Neville (Duxbury, Mass.) each had one goal.

Lauren Malinowski (Longmeadow, Mass.) had one goal and assist for Trinity, while Allen finished with a pair of goals.

O'Brien had 11 of her 20 stops in the second half when the Mules were holding on to the lead. Michelle Smith (Wayland, Mass.) had 16 saves for Trinity.
