Williamson, Riley lead Colby women's soccer past Williams
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Laura Williamson (Kingswood Oxford/Manchester, Conn.) scored with just 1:48 left in the game and senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Riley (Thornton Academy/Saco, Maine) made 19 saves in helping the Colby College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Williams College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Sunday.
Colby improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. Williams, which was ranked sixth in the NSCAA New England Regional poll at the start of the week, fell to 5-3-1 overall and 3-3 in the league.
Williamson scored on a shot from about 18 yards out that found the upper right corner of the net. The sophomore forward leads Colby with nine goals and one assist for 19 points this year and has 23 goals in 23 career collegiate games. Katie McCabe (Taft School/Watertown, Conn.) had the assist on the goal.
Williams had the better of play for much of the game and had a huge 27-8 advantage in shots. However, Riley's play in goal and her numerous diving saves kept Williams off the scoreboard. The Ephs missed a penalty kick with about 39 minutes left in the game that deflected off the crossbar.
Colby plays a non-conference game at St. Joseph's College at 4 p.m. Wednesday and then visits 20th-ranked Amherst at 11 a.m. Saturday. Williams will entertain Keene State in a non-league game Wednesday at 4:30 p .m.
