Colby women's soccer defeats Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine --- Senior forward Christina Andaya (Old Bridge, N.J./Saint John Vianney) scored a pair of goals 1:54 apart midway through the second half to lift the visiting Colby College Mules to a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's soccer match played Tuesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

The win snapped a two-match losing skid for Colby, and improved its overall record to 7-5-1. Southern Maine, winless in its last three matches (0-2-1), slides to 7-6-4 overall.

Trailing 1-0, the visitors took control of the match in the second half. Andaya tied the match at 72:02 as she neatly finished off a series of passes from freshman Katie McCabe (Watertown, Conn./Taft School) and junior Kara McCabe (Watertown, Conn./Taft School) for her second goal of the season.

Andaya wasted little time giving the Mules the lead as she took a pass for senior Katie Austgen (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) and lofted a shot over USM senior goalkeeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.) at 73:56.

In a fairly evenly played first half, Southern Maine got the only goal when junior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner HS) outworked a Colby defender for the ball, took a couple of touches into the penalty box and beat Colby sophomore goalkeeper Liza Benson (Orchid, Fla./ Lawrence Academy) at the 31:39 mark. The goal was Brunton's eighth of the campaign.

Colby finished the match with a 16-7 advantage in total shots while the Huskies held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Colby had a 12-2 margin in shots in the second half. Benson was credited with five saves during the match while Ansley had three saves.

Southern Maine hosts Eastern Connecticut State University in its conference and regular season finale Saturday, starting at 1:00 p.m. Colby travels to conference rival Bates College for an 11:00 a.m. match on Saturday.
