Colby women's soccer tops University of New England

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Libba Cox (Guilford, Conn.) and Laura Williamson (Manchester, Conn.) scored goals in a two-minute span of the first half to help the Colby College women's soccer team break away for a 3-1 non-conference victory over University of New England on Tuesday.

Colby (1-0-1) started fast when Kaitlin Herlihy (Simsbury, Conn.) stole a clearing pass and lofted a high shot over UNE goalkeeper Amanda Brown (Scarborough, Maine) just 1:40 into the game.

UNE tied the game at 21:03 when Amanda Smith (Londonderry, N.H.) broke in on the left side and ripped an 18-yarder into the left corner of the net.

Cox stole a ball from a defender in front of the net and tallied at 27:37 of the opening half for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Williamson took a feed from Cox and dribbled around Brown for an easy goal just 1:58 later for the final goal.

Colby's Liza Benson (Orchid, Fla.) made one save in the victory. Brown had seven saves in 72 minutes and Mallory Wilson (Gray, Maine) stopped one shot the rest of the way for UNE.

Colby is back in action at home against University of Maine at Farmington at 4 p.m. Thursday. UNE plays at home against Wentworth Institute of Technology at noon Saturday.
