Colby women's soccer breaks away from Maine-Farmington

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Libba Cox (Choate Rosemary Hall/Guilford, Conn.) scored about nine minutes into the second half to break a 1-1 tie and send the Colby College women's soccer team to a 4-1 non-conference victory over University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday.

Colby improved to 2-0-1 this season heading into Saturday's big New England Small College Athletic Conference home game against rival Bowdoin College at 11 a.m.

Maine-Farmington (1-2) took a 1-0 lead when Kelsey Burk (Westbrook, Maine) scored off an assist from Molly Hagstrom (New Sharon, Maine) just 8:26 into the opening half.

Laura Williamson (Kingswood Oxford/Manchester, Conn.) tied the game for Colby at 26:53 and that's how the first half ended offensively.

Colby toughened up in the second half and once again held the opponent scoreless in the final 45 minutes. The Mules have not given up a goal in the second half in their first three games.

Cox got her game-winning goal off an assist from first-year defender Katie McCabe (Taft School/Watertown, Conn.), who got her first collegiate point. Sophomore Meg Davis (Hopkinton/Hopkinton, Mass.) added an insurance score with her first collegiate goal from Meggie Herlihy (Simsbury/Simsbury, Conn.) at 69:54. Amanda Walsh (Salem/Salem, Mass.) closed out the scoring with 2:58 left in the game off a pass from junior Kara McCabe (Taft School/Watertown, Conn.).

Colby goaltender Elizabeth Riley (Thornton Academy/Saco, Maine) made one save in picking up the victory.
