Hughes, Dunn fall in ITA doubles final
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. ---
Colby College's Sara Hughes (S. Burlington/S. Burlington, Vt.) and Allison Dunn (St. Gregory/Tucson, Ariz.) had a great run in doubles play at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Women's Championships this weekend, but the winning stopped on Sunday.
Hughes and Dunn fell 8-3 in the doubles final to a strong Amherst pair of Rachel Holt and Alicia Menezes. Holt has been one of the top players in the NESCAC the past few years, while first-year student Menezes also won the ITA singles title.
Hughes and Dunn got to the final with an 8-5 victory over Middlebury's Amanda Berck and Amy Roche in a semifinal match Saturday. The hardest match for the Colby duo came in a quarterfinal round with a 9-8 (4) win against Annie Schneidman and Allie Rottkamp of Williams.
In the opening two rounds Friday, Hughes and Dunn took an 8-6 win over Connecticut College's Beret Remak and Lisa Steckmest in the second round and an 8-4 victory over Bowdoin's Kristina Sisk and Julia Shaver in the opening round.
For winning the tourney, Holt and Menezes automatically earn national All-America honors and now play in the ITA National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers from October 14-17.
