Foster, Minty, Werlin earn District 1 academic honors
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Men's track and field athlete Jason Foster (Waterbury, Vt.), women's cross country and track and field competitor Jess Minty (Concord, Mass.), and men's lacrosse player Nate Werlin (Winchester, Mass.) were all named to the CoSIDA District 1 All-Academic Team.
Foster was on the first team for men's track and field, while Minty earned first team honors for women's cross country/track and field. Werlin was on the second team men's at-large division. Foster and Minty are both now eligible for National Academic All-America honors since they were on the first team for their respective sports. District 1 is for Division II and III colleges in New York and New England.
Foster finished his final outdoor track and field season by earning All-America honors in placing fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division III Championships. He also earned his first All-America honor during the indoor season by throwing a school record 61 feet in taking seventh in the 35-pound weight throw at nationals.
Foster was the 2005 NESCAC champion in the hammer throw and was second in the event this year. His best throw of 191-02 in the hammer ranks second all-time at Colby to three-time national champion Jamie Brewster. Foster also won the Maine State title in the hammer throw and took second in the event at the New England Division III Championships. He is a five-time NESCAC All-Academic selection for the winter and spring seasons.
Foster earned Colby's Donald Lake Award for outstanding athletic ability, leadership, and academic accomplishment. He was a double major at Colby in geosciences and history. Foster earned the Geology Faculty Award, served on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, the President's Council, and the Campus Services Committee.
Minty earned All-America honors in cross country and indoor track and field. Despite competing and breaking school records in the 800 and 1,500 meters during her career, she ran in the 10,000-meter run at the NESCAC Championships a few weeks ago and earned the title.
Minty finished in second place in the 800 meters at the indoor national meet in 2005, was seventh in the 800 indoor in earning another All-America honor in 2006, and has earned numerous All-New England, All-NESCAC and All-State of Maine honors. She was the MVP of the cross country team in 2005 and helped the Mules to two straight fifth place finishes at the NCAA meet in her junior and senior seasons.
Minty is a seven-time NESCAC All-Academic selection and earned Cosida District 1 All-Academic second team honors last year. She was honored with Colby's Patty Valavanis Award for academics, athletics, personal leadership, and sportsmanship. Minty was the Economics Club President in 2005-06, served as a researcher and tutor for the Colby Economics Department, and won Colby's Christian Johnson Award in economics.
Werlin was a key defensively for the men's lacrosse team as a long-stick midfielder. He led Colby in takeaways this past season with 48 and added 39 ground balls. Werlin finished with 86 ground balls during his junior season.
Werlin, a mathematics major who minored in physics, was a math teacher's assistant and a calculus tutor during his time at Colby. He was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, a national physics honor society. Werlin worked with the Maine Handicapped Ski Program at Sunday River in fund-raising and taught lacrosse this past year at a local elementary school. Werlin also is in charge of attendance at events for the Mayflower Foundation in Boston, a public charity that raises money for charities such as Make-A-Wish Foundation.
