Colby baseball takes win over Fredonia, loses to Amherst

FORT MYERS, Fla. --- The Colby College baseball team got three hits and three RBI from first-year player Craig Cooper in a 16-7 victory over Fredonia State in the second game of the team's Florida trip on Sunday.

The Mules fell 5-2 to Amherst College in the season opener earlier in the day.

Tom Salemy and Roddy Ames each had three hits and two RBI in the win over Fredonia. Tyler Hales also had three hits, while Jon Vacca finished with two hits and three RBI.

Colby (1-1) exploded for 14 runs in the first three innings against Fredonia in taking a 14-2 lead. The Mules pounded out 18 hits to make a winner out of Sam Kennedy-Smith, who went five innings before three other Colby pitchers closed out the victory.

In the game against Amherst, the Mules had a 2-0 lead after two innings, but the Lord Jeffs tied the game with two runs in the third inning and got lone runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Nick Spillane had two hits for Colby against Amherst. Vacca and Brian Liberty both had an RBI. Hales worked seven innings on the mound for Colby.

The Mules play a doubleheader with Oberlin College on Monday with the first game starting at noon.
