Colby baseball at 3-1 after sweeping Oberlin

FORT MYERS, Fla. --- The Colby College baseball team is off to a 3-1 start to the season after sweeping a doubleheader against Oberlin College by identical 6-2 scores on Monday in Florida.

The Mules got a strong outing in his first collegiate start from Justin Clark (Brunswick, Maine), who worked six innings before giving way to Robert Whelan (Boston, Mass.) for the final two innings of the opener.

Oberlin had 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the game, but the Mules took control with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 5-2 and then added a lone run in the sixth. Nick Spillane (Darien, Conn.), Roddy Ames (Cotuit, Mass.) and Craig Cooper (Trumbull, Conn.) all had two hits. Tyler Hales (Lexington, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of RBI, while Ames and Cooper also had one RBI apiece to go with their hitting.

In the very similar second game, Robert Rosenbaum entered the game in the fifth inning to pitch and earned the victory in relief. Whelan came in the game in the seventh once again to close out the victory. In both games, Colby had six runs and 11 hits, while Oberlin had two runs and four hits.

Hales had a two-run double in the sixth for Colby, which had pairs of runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Jon Vacca (Quincy, Mass.) added three hits, while Spillane and Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.) both had two hits. John Murphy (Hingham, Mass.) had an RBI double for Colby.

The Mules meet Trinity Christian College at noon on Tuesday in Fort Myers.
