Southern Maine holds off Colby in baseball, 18-15
WATERVILLE, Maine ---- In a game with five homers and 33 hits, the University of Southern Maine held off a Colby College rally to take an 18-15 non-conference baseball victory on Wednesday at Coombs Field.
Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine) and Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) both had grand slam homers in an eight-run fifth inning for Southern Maine (15-8). Pike also hit a two-run home run in the third inning.
Southern Maine held a 14-4 lead at one point, but Colby scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added four more runs in the seventh to tighten the game up.
Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine) went 4-for-6, while Joe Ganley and Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) each went 3-for-4 for the Huskies.
Greg Ortiz (Northbrook, Ill.) homered among his three hits and drove in six runs for Colby (6-13). Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.) also homered, had three hits and drove in four runs. Nick Spillane (Darien, Conn.) added four hits for the Mules, while Tyler Hales (Lexington, Mass.) and Colin Riggs (Duxbury, Mass.) both had three hits.
