Colby baseball rips Bates, 16-3, in league game
LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior third baseman Andy Carr (Conway, N.H.) blasted a
leadoff home run in the second inning and went on to go 5-for-6 with three
runs and five RBIs as Colby College routed Bates College 16-3 Friday
afternoon in a NESCAC East Division baseball at Leahey Field.
The Mules (7-12, 2-5 NESCAC East) pounded out 18 hits and scored multiple
runs in five different innings. First-year shortstop Craig Cooper
(Trumbull, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs, while junior
Tom Salemy went 3-for-6 with three runs and junior Brian Liberty (Hollis,
N.H.) went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases.
The teams will play a doubleheader at Colby on Saturday starting at noon.
Carr led off Colby's four-run second with a blast off of Bates sophomore
starter Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) that traveled well beyond the
right-field fence. The Mules added five more in the third, all charged to
VanderVliet (1-2), to go ahead 9-1 and cruised from there.
Colby senior lefthander Tyler Hales (Lexington, Mass.) pitched seven
innings, surrendering three runs on three hits and five walks while
striking out three to raise his record to 2-2 on the season. Junior Jack
Peet (Chadd's Ford, Pa.) and junior Bob Brady (Huntington Beach, Calif.)
each threw shutout innings of mopup relief.
Bates (7-11, 1-6 NESCAC East) collected five hits in the game and scored
lone runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings.
